Lisbon gives you a long season: it is pleasant from April to October, and Atlantic air keeps it more bearable than the Mediterranean in high summer. Tiled hills, cheap food, and beaches plus Sintra's palaces within a 40-minute train ride.

Is Lisbon good in August?
Yes, but it is the busiest and priciest month. The Atlantic keeps temperatures a few degrees below inland Portugal, and beaches at Cascais and Costa da Caparica are easy to reach.
Do you need a car in Lisbon?
No. Trains cover Sintra, Cascais and Setúbal, and the city itself is best walked. Rent a car only if you plan to continue to the Alentejo or Algarve.
